Computed Tomography (CT or CAT Scan) scanning is a rapid, painless diagnostic examination that combines x-rays and computers. A CT scan allows a radiologist to see the location, nature, and extent of many different diseases or abnormalities inside your body. CT scanning can be used to obtain information about almost any body organ (such as liver, pancreas, intestines, kidneys, adrenal glands, lungs and heart), blood vessels, the abdominal cavity, bones, and the spinal cord. Our centers have multi-slice, helical CT scanners which generate data and details quickly and accurately.

You may be asked to change into a scrub top or pants before the exam.

During the exam, you will be positioned on the exam table which moves through the CT scanner. This movement is very controlled and smooth. You may be asked to hold your breath for short intervals during the exam. Depending on the type of exam that your physician has ordered, you may receive an injection of what is called a contrast agent - this allows a certain area of your body to show up more distinctly on the images. If you have ever had a reaction of any kind to an injection during a prior CT exam, PLEASE INFORM THE TECHNOLOGIST PRIOR TO THE EXAM.

The exam generally takes between 10 and 20 minutes to complete.

After the exam, a radiologist will review the images and a report will be sent to your physician. Your physician will contact you regarding these results.
